The Kargo Magalies Adventure is the largest and most prestigious mountain bike stage race in Gauteng. It is only 3 years old, but is growing from strength to strength, as the extremely popular and well renowned mountain biking trails at Van Gaalen's Cheese Farm attract riders from all over the country.
The race consists of 3 stages: Stage 1 is a short, extremely fun and invigorating night stage on the Friday, starting at 17:30 and 25km long. But do not be fooled; the route is very technical and very dark, so a good light is imperative. This stage is possibly some of the most fun a mountain biker can have on a bike and a real treat for the adrenaline junkies out there!
Stage 2 is the toughie. With extreme temperatures and 75 technical kilometres to ride, it tests riders in all aspects: mentally and physically. The hard work pays off, not only in the breath-taking single track and views, but in relaxing after the stage. This is certainly a treat with great food and a chance to relax with friends in the sun, listening to some live bands and reflecting on the day’s challenge.
The 3rd and final stage is 45km long and much milder; it is also made into a one day event for any mountain bikers keen for a good day out on the bike, a braai and live entertainment.
Here are some things people had to say: Winner (men): “The distances were short but it was still a really tough race. The single track was amazing. Awesome course!”
Eric Schipper (route designer): “The weather was warmer than usual and I changed the route slightly to prevent bottle necks. I made day 2 very tough, but everyone enjoyed the event and it was a huge success.”
James (entertainer for the kiddies’ race): “It is great to create a family vibe and start encouraging our future cyclists from a young age.”
Samantha Oosthuizen: “the most fun you can have with your clothes on.”
Another major success from Leverage Corporation, this is a must-do race for every mountain biker at least once in their lives.
